Trust and satisfaction ratings for the Philippines’ top officials reveal significant regional disparities. According to a recent survey by Tangere, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s ratings have risen slightly, while Vice President Sara Duterte’s have seen a minor decline, underscoring entrenched political loyalties.
Marcos Gains Ground in Northern Regions
Conducted from September 16 to 19, the survey reports that President Marcos’s trust ratings increased marginally from 58.50% in August to 58.80% in September. Likewise, his satisfaction rating climbed from 46% to 46.40%. His strongest backing comes from Northern and Central Luzon, regions historically aligned with the Marcos legacy. These areas are vital to his popularity, particularly among younger voters aged 26 to 35.
Contrastingly, Mindanao remains a stronghold of distrust against Marcos, especially among voters aged 51 and above. The divide reflects longstanding political affiliations to the Duterte family in the southern region, despite Marcos’s national gains.
Vice President Duterte Faces Mixed Regional Support
Vice President Sara Duterte has experienced a slight decline in trust from 57% in August to 56.70% in September, alongside a dip in satisfaction from 49% to 48.70%. Mindanao continues to provide her with robust support, contrasting with higher dissatisfaction levels in Northern and Central Luzon, strongholds of President Marcos.
Impact on Political Dynamics
These regional disparities hold significant implications as political dynamics evolve. The steadfast local allegiances underscore how public opinion remains deeply divided along historical lines, pointing to potential challenges in achieving broader national consensus. Future political strategies may need to address these pervasive divisions to unify public sentiment across the nation.
