The 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) witnessed a significant push for green technology in Cagayan Valley, emphasizing the region’s potential as a hub for sustainable innovation. Held from September 25-27 at SM Tuguegarao, the event revolved around the theme, ‘Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan.’
DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang highlighted the critical role of science and technology in driving socio-economic growth, urging participants to collaborate and foster innovation. ‘This event showcases the power of STI to transform our region into a beacon for sustainable advancement,’ Mabborang stated during his opening remarks.
The development of green technology in the region is propelled by DOST’s flagship Niche Centers in the Regions for R&D (NICER) program. Dr. Leah J. Buendia, DOST Undersecretary for Research & Development, noted that DOST Region 2 has seen significant investments with 18 centers established and PHP 225 million earmarked for fostering innovation.
DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. pointed out Cagayan Valley’s abundant natural resources and emphasized how STI-driven strategies could leverage these to tackle challenges in electromobility, agriculture, and disaster preparedness. ‘By integrating sustainability in our regional practices, we align with both local and global demands,’ Solidum asserted.
A key highlight of the event was the inauguration of two significant installations: the Electric Mobility R&D Center (EMRDC) and the Metals Engineering Innovation Center, reaffirming the region’s commitment to technological advancement. Furthermore, forums discussing green economy practices and training workshops on translating health research into policy advanced regional growth initiatives.
The festivities concluded with the search for ‘Ginoo at Binibining Agham at Teknolohiya,’ celebrating young science advocates, and the ‘Kathabi’ fashion show featuring sustainable design innovations. As Cagayan Valley progresses on its journey to becoming an innovation epicenter, the 2024 RSTW underscores its dedication to utilizing science and technology to ensure a prosperous future.
