On the 52nd anniversary of Martial Law’s declaration in the Philippines, tensions flared as protesters converged in Manila, attempting to reach Mendiola Bridge. This historical remembrance of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s regime ignited clashes with anti-riot police, highlighting ongoing societal rifts.
Activists vs. Police: A Tense Standoff
Images from the heart of the demonstration showed protesters facing off against a police line armed with shields. In one striking image, an officer subdued a man on the ground. Arrest details were unclear at the time, but student publication ‘The Adamson Chronicle‘ circulated footage of a supposed “police barricade” deterring the demonstrators. Adaptability marked the day as protesters, thwarted in their advance, erected a mobile stage on Recto Avenue to continue their protest.
Memorial Events Highlight Past and Present Struggles
Meanwhile, in other parts of the city, activists assembled for remembrance on España Avenue near Welcome Rotonda. The scene was marked by negotiations between organizers and police. Additionally, the Buhay and EDSA Campaign Network planned a candle-lighting ceremony across the nation that evening, symbolizing solidarity against past and current human rights injustices. According to the Human Rights Victims’ Memorial Commission, more than 11,103 people were victims of rights violations during martial law, reminding all of the ongoing need for vigilance and advocacy.
The anniversary thus served as both a commemoration and a call to action, urging continued resistance against oppression.
