In a determined bid to combat corruption in the Philippines, Rep. Eddie Villanueva of the Citizens’ Battle Against Corruption (CIBAC) is making headlines with his ambitious proposals aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in government.
Recently taking his oath of office, Villanueva reaffirmed his commitment to intensifying efforts against corrupt practices that he believes are crippling the nation’s progress.Villanueva is advocating for the establishment of a National Independent Commission Against Corruption (NICAC), which would serve as a watchdog to investigate and prosecute corrupt officials. He emphasizes that such a commission is essential for restoring public trust in government institutions. “We need a robust mechanism that can act independently and decisively against corruption,” he stated during a press conference.
In addition to the NICAC, Villanueva is proposing the revival of the death penalty for government officials convicted of embezzling over P100 million. This controversial measure aims to send a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated. “Political corruption is a leading cause of poverty in our country,” he asserted, underscoring the urgent need for legislative action.
