The Commission on Elections (Comelec) concluded the filing period for the 2025 national and local elections, with 184 senatorial candidates and 190 party-list groups submitting certificates on October 8, 2024. This year’s process was marked by an overall peaceful atmosphere.

During the eight-day window from October 1-8, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported a calm environment, despite the backdrop of usual electoral tensions. PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo credited media collaborations and vigilant Comelec oversight for minimizing disruptions. “We had a peaceful filing period across different precincts,” she stated, while mentioning an unverified shooting incident in Maguindanao del Sur under investigation.

Confirming smooth operations, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia pointed out that satellite venues efficiently managed the volume of last-minute candidates even in high-demand zones. This preparation is part of the broader logistical planning for an election in which 18,280 positions will be contested, engaging nearly 70 million Filipino voters.

Comelec now shifts its focus to verifying local candidacies and ensuring readiness for the May 2025 polls. Although isolated concerns surfaced, the orderly conduct of COC filings sets a positive tone for Eleksyon 2025. “Our efforts have further strengthened democratic processes and trust in the electoral system,” Garcia added. Looking ahead, stringent measures will remain crucial to uphold this momentum as the nation inches closer to election day.
