Angeles City, Pampanga, has been awarded Asia’s Best Emerging Culinary City at the World Culinary Awards 2024, solidifying its place on the global food tourism map. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco praised the city’s local chefs and food artisans, highlighting their talent and dedication in bringing Filipino cuisine to the world stage.
“This prestigious recognition underscores the exceptional talent, creativity, and dedication of its local chefs and food artisans,” said Secretary Frasco. This accolade marks Angeles City’s first recognition in this category, with the award being accepted by Department of Tourism Central Luzon Regional Director Richard Daenos at a ceremony in Dubai.
Angeles City is renowned for its rich culinary legacy, particularly its iconic dish, sisig. The city continues to captivate both local and international food enthusiasts with its diverse food offerings from traditional street food to esteemed restaurants. Secretary Frasco commendably acknowledged local stakeholders for their tireless efforts in preserving and promoting this culinary heritage.
The award coincides with Angeles City’s initiatives to highlight its culinary treasures, such as recognizing Sisig Babi as Intangible Heritage. These efforts, alongside broader regional programs like Food Talks and the First International Conference on Kapampangan Cuisine & Food Tourism, contribute significantly to the city’s growing prominence in the culinary world.
Frasco also emphasized the Department of Tourism’s commitment to advancing culinary tourism through continuous promotion and innovation. The award serves as a testament to such initiatives making Filipino flavors increasingly dominant on international menus.
Adding to these achievements, the DOT has engaged in numerous nationwide food tourism endeavors, further enhancing the Philippines’ reputation as a vibrant culinary destination.
