The 2024 Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) began on October 2 at the Veranza Activity Center in General Santos City, showcasing the Department of Science and Technology Region 12’s (DOST XII) commitment to sustainable innovation. With a focus on eco-friendly solutions in critical sectors like energy and agriculture, the event gathers key stakeholders, including innovators, researchers, and government leaders, to explore paths toward a resilient future.
Engr. Sammy P. Malawan, DOST XII Regional Director, emphasized the event’s role in empowering communities through diverse activities and achievements. “This year’s RSTW highlights our region’s commitment to innovation,” Malawan stated. Engr. Sancho Mabborang, Undersecretary for Regional Operations, highlighted the shift from viewing sustainable development as a choice to regarding it as a necessity. “The choices we make today impact not just our quality of life but also future generations,” he remarked.
DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., in his keynote address, framed the celebration as not only a reflection of past accomplishments but as a commitment to shaping an environmentally friendly economy. “We are here to build a future that benefits people and the planet,” Solidum asserted.
Awards were presented to outstanding projects under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) and Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST). The event also featured the KatHABI Fashion Show, a partnership with the DOST Philippine Textile Research Institute that highlighted sustainable fashion made from local textiles. This celebration of culture and sustainability underscores DOST’s dedication to supporting local artisans and promoting a circular economy.
